Artistic Director Joanna Haigood relocated to San Francisco from New York in 1979 and co-founded Zaccho Dance Theatre in 1980 with Lynda Reiman.
Performed in two San Francisco Bay Area parks, the audience was led by a “Pied Piper” figure through the trees, creeks, and meadows while performers appeared and disappeared along the path. Those in full animal head masks danced on trapeze, rope, and spider webs they had woven.
From 1984 to 1986 Zaccho Dance Theatre is based at the historic Footwork Studio in San Francisco’s Mission District.
In the spring of 1987, Joanna Haigood was accepted as an Artist-In-Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts. There she met sculptor Mark Thompson, whose work centers around natural processes and the honey bee hive
Zaccho Studio is located within Yosemite Place in Bayview Hunters Point, a former Serta Mattress Factory and home to many San Francisco Bay Area artists and craftsperson.
Zaccho offers our first youth program with trapeze workshops in partnership with All Hallows High School.
